I am a new user of this site, porting my existing web pages from Host Monster…
I copied my existing folder structure over, and most things have gone fine, but I had a bunch of warning messages flash by in File Explorer, during the transfer, about forbidden extensions, but I didn’t have time to actually read them… I saw .exe and .pdf, though my one .pdf file appears to be accessible on the new page… .exe are not, which is okay I guess, fortunately I didn’t have many of those.
What other extensions are blocked here? and is there some way I can diff between the IF copy and my local copy, to see what else might have been blocked?
No extensions are blocked in a way where the files are deleted, at least that I know of. Instead, the account is suspended if you are abusing the service. File types like PDF, EXE, ZIP and RAR are commonly used to abuse the service, and are more closely monitored.
Okay, thanks for this info; the link you provided is where I previously saw the notes about .pdf and .exe files…
I have since realized that (1) .pdf files aren’t blocked; I have one such document, and it is in fact readable on my website… (2) .exe are blocked from access on the pages, but as you noted, they were not deleted or blocked, they are just not downloadable…
Anyway, my pages are uploaded and accessible with no issues now… I moved all the .exe files into .zip files - actually, I thought I had done that years ago!! So I’m not having any issues with access now.
Hi all; I was recently asking questions about non-supported files… @Greenreader9 responded:
No, they are not blocked, but they are forbidden, which is the question you asked. Read the > terms and conditions.
So I’m looking at the page Terms of Service - InfinityFree
but the term “pdf” does not exist in that document at all…
Please clarify what, specifically, you wished me to be aware of, in the ToS ??
Thanks
To clarify, file types like PDF and EXE are used to abuse the service, so they are kind of watched a bit closer, and it’s possible you can be suspended for having them on your site.
From Admin himself:
Basically, since these file types are often used by sites using IF as a storage provider, and there was a deal a (year? Two years?) ago that involved a virus in a PDF file on free hosting, I think while not technically against the rules, they are not allowed here.
Per the ToS point, I mentally switched up the part I quoted above with the ToS, my bad.
Thank ye for the clarification, @Greenreader9 !!
This does leave me with an ambiguous situation, though… the fact is, that PDF is the most common format, by far, for distributing general documents… if that format is forbidden on this platform (even though they are not, in fact, blocking viewing of them), what format are we expected to use for providing documentation, information, etc?? User manuals and such things are virtually always in PDF …
