Error Message

“Cannot select database. The database server could be connected to (which means your username and password is okay) but the if0_43037022_wp515 database could not be selected.”

Other Information

Account: if0_43037022

  • Today (29 Sept) my WordPress site shows the error above. In the client area, the MySQL Databases page for this account says “No databases found on this account”.
  • The Deactivation History for this account is empty, so it was never deactivated.
  • The client area shows the “Account stuck in processing” notice, and the status page says account suspensions, reactivations and deletions have not been processed since around midnight UTC on 28 Sept. It is still marked as not resolved.
  • On 28 Sept I requested the deactivation and deletion of two other accounts in the same client area (if0_42775698 and if0_42985879). Both still show the “processing” icon.
  • The WordPress error shows the database user as “43037022_2”, while the control panel shows the MySQL username as “if0_43037022”.

Could you check whether the database if0_43037022_wp515 still exists on the server, and whether it was affected by this incident or by those two pending deletions? The site was new and had no content yet, so I mainly want to know if the account is healthy and if I can create a new database safely.

If there was a database with a particular name and it’s both not visible in the members area and not visible to your website, then you can be pretty much certain that the database is gone.

If you want to do one more last ditch effort, you can try to create a database with the same name from the members area. If the data of that database still exists, doing so will recover the missing database and give you access to it. It won’t delete any data. But being honest here: it’s a long shot.

If the database is truly gone, then I don’t know what happened to it. I have no way to see any databases you’ve had in the past or who or what deleted them.

Since I don’t know why the database is gone, I cannot guarantee you that it won’t happen again. But databases generally don’t disappear on their own. And I see no reason to suggest that your account is not healthy, or that creating a new account would help you in any way. So creating a new database on the existing account is fine.

As for the other questions: the outage concerned account status changes, which does not apply to this account. And changes to one account cannot affect other accounts. So I don’t see any reason to suggest that the ongoing outage and the missing database are related in any way.

Actually, scratch my previous reply.

I just noticed that there are a number of other topics where people are also reporting missing databases, which suggests that something is going on. If have submitted a request upstream to see if we can find out more about what happened here.

Just wanted to post an update here in case you didn’t see the issue on the status page.

The issue was identified as a database permission issue. The bug has been identified and resolved, and the fix has been retroactively applied to affected websites.

This means that the databases that had disappeared were not actually lost. They have been recovered, are fully accessible, and your website should now be working again.
