I have received further information from the registry about the reason for the suspension. They have reported a number of URLs for which they received abuse reports. However, all sites reported were already taken down anywhere between a few days and a few months before the domain was suspended.
I have sent this information to them. Now we have to wait for them to review it and reactivate the domain name.
I don’t think their goals are that nefarious. I think they just want to keep their own house clean, and don’t care at all what impact it has on their customers. Because being strict on abuse is more important than providing a reliable service.
To be honest, I have used various domain registrars and hosting providers with similar policies. I even had one registrar that would just perma-ban your domain if they received three abuse reports, regardless of whether those abuse reports were even valid.
But with registrars, you can take your business elsewhere. If the registry is being difficult, there is nothing you can do, because they can do whatever they want with the extensions they control.
The issue was just resolved. ! received a reply from the .online registry around 14:30 UTC saying they would reactivate the domain name. And the domain name now appears to be back!
Do note that:
Due to DNS caching, it can take a few hours or even up to three days for every website to be accessible again everywhere. That’s just how DNS works, we have no control over that.
I still recommend to switch to a different subdomain ASAP. There is no telling when the domain may be suspended again.
