I am afraid that I absolutely freeze when it comes time to renew SSL certificates, I am ashamed to say. It is all double dutch to me but in the past, I have managed it eventually.
This time round it has been a complete failure having spent hours reading and re-reading and getting nowhere.
I get my SSL certificate from Cloudfare. I have just entered my Cname record ending in ‘comodoca.com’ as directed. However, I had no idea what to put in the “Source” box, so I put ‘Cloudfare’. But the other two Cname records which have an option to ‘delete’ against them have a completely different string of numbers where I have put ‘Cloudfare’. I am assuming these other two records are old ones which are out of date and can be deleted, or not ?
I do not know whether I have done this correctly but I have a very nasty feeling that putting ‘Cloudfare’ in the ‘Source’ box was wrong.
If you’re using Cloudflare, you can do pretty much everything on their side. Request a SSL certificate on their platform because it’s auto renewed. You just have to create it once.
However, if you want strict SSL mode on Cloudflare, you need at least a self signed certificate on InfinityFree. It will last for 10 years and works perfectly because it only works between the server and Cloudflare. Your viewers are never served by this one so it’s “lack of trust” is not relevant.
You can get one here: https://app.infinityfree.net/ssls
Thanks, I will try it. But from what you say, I still need a self-certificate from Infinityfree to do it. But I am stuck because I do not know what I put in the Source box for that !
Please just use the free SSL available on InfinityFree. Just login to the client area and click on “FREE SSL” in the navigation bar. It is a lot easier. Also, the SSL prover should provide the source.
You don’t need to enter any information for this. Just click on “Flexible” under SSL. If you want to set it to “Full”, see the above instructions.
Thanks.
If you want a Self Signed SSL certificate, you don’t need to setup any CNAME records. The domain validation for those certificates is done based on the domains assigned to your hosting account.
So if you already have the domain set up, you can just add the domain to the client area, hit Request SSL Certificate and have your certificate within a minute.
And don’t worry about renewing those too. Renewing them is just as easy as getting the first certificate, and the certificates are valid for 10 years.
Still no luck, despite more hours trying to sort this out. Setting up my own domain is no use, because it re-directs to Infinityfree, namely to *.epizy.com. It is my webspace on epizy.com that I need the SSL for. I have tried to figure that out but I am obviously being daft.
So as an alternative, I tried to get a new SSL from Cloudflare, but fared no better. When asked to add a website, I put in the URL of my Infinityfree website but get the response “Please ensure you are providing the root domain and not any subdomains (e.g., example.com, not subdomain.example.com)”. I even tried just the “epizy.com” part but of course got the message “This web property cannot be added to Cloudflare”.
I would be grateful for some advice as to where I am going wrong. I cannot believe that I am being so stupid.
Oh, I see. The penny has dropped. Thanks for that.
I do have my own domain with 123-reg which points to Infinityfree, as I said. Therefore, I presume that I use that domain to get the certificate, and then somehow or other, I upload the certificate to the sub-domain. Is that correct ?
First you said Cloudflare and now you say you’re using a free subdomain? You can’t do both of those things. Can you please share the domain name for which you want to get SSL so we all know we’re talking about the same thing?
Thank you for coming back to me.
Out of desperation, because I could not make any progress with the Infinityfree SSL for my website, I did not know what else to do. Therefore I tried Cloudflare but I have not got anywhere with that either, and I am beside myself with worry because the content concerns a serious legal matter.
Of course I am happy to share the domain, but I do not wish to do so publicly. Is there any way I can share it with a limited audience ?
In essence, I have a .uk domain registered with 123-reg, which points to Infinityfree (epizy.com). I need to secure the website with SSL because otherwise the Court will not consider the content. I think my name server is with Cloudflare because that was recommended I when secured the website with SSL the first time. I really do not understand why renewal has been so difficult this time, but it is probably due to my age of 74.
I have literally spent two whole days doing nothing else but trying to understand the instructions, but I have achieved nothing. Therefore if someone could help me, I would be indebted.
Hey there, can you please private message me your domain? (Click my icon and click “Message”. I will not share it, and delete it after you solved your problem.) After I take a look at some relevant DNS information, I will be able to tell you how to proceed.
Thanks.
Edit: Thanks, it looks like your site is now on IF nameservers, but maybe the outage could be causing the SSL issue. I recommend using Cloudflare’s “Flexible” SSL until the issue is resolved.
OK, I think I found the domain too on your profile.
The first thing to do if you want to host a website with us is to add the domain name to your hosting account. While you can point the domain to our servers, our servers won’t know what to show on your domain if it’s not assigned to an account.
Note that you will need to switch your domain name to our nameservers to add it to your account, but you can switch it back to Cloudflare afterwards if you want.
After the domain has been added to your account, you can also request and install an SSL certificate for it.
