Other Information

Firstly, can anyone confirm that InfinityFree “Free” hosting has “mod_rewrite“ enabled?

I’m trying to remove “index.php” from the URLs on my Joomla site (version 5.3.3). I have followed these steps but still getting 404 errors:

  1. Enable SEF URLs

  • In Joomla Administration, go to System → Global Configuration.
  • Under the Site tab, find the SEO Settings section.
  • Set:
    • Search Engine Friendly URLs = Yes

    • Use URL Rewriting = Yes

  1. Rename htaccess.txt

  • In your Joomla root folder, find the file named htaccess.txt.
  • Rename it to .htaccess
  • I have also cleared the Joomla cache
  • I have also tried commenting out the “Options +FollowSymLinks” setting in htaccess

I don’t think the mod_rewrite is working since pages like https://barrybutcher.free.nf/other-barry-butchers don’t work.

Anyone any clueswhat is wrong?

mod_rewrite is fully enabled on free hosting, please check if your configuration is wrong.

Hi Meishin. Thanks for such quick reply and great to hear it is enabled and so cal rule that out as problem.
I have listed the configration I have used and looks right to everything I’ve read, hence being stuck now.

Anyone know any additional configuration needed to rewrite these URLs?

I had a quick look at your account and I think I see the issue.

The file must be named .htaccess. It must have that exact name.

You don’t have a file like that, but there is a file named htaccess (without the dot at the start). But the server does not recognize that file and so it will not load it.

Please rename the htaccess file to .htaccess, and it should work.

Oh my god you’re right of course. I’ve updated and now working perfectly. I remember reading that instruction to rename and just deleting the suffix - mistake. Must be word blind from reading it so many times and could figure the settings wern’t working but couldn’t see it.

Sorry for the simpliest of mistakes and I owe you one - but is really apreciated and a +1 for your service…

Thanks
Barry.
