Problems getting to the website

Hello,

Its been a couple months and Im still having problems getting to my website regularly. If you type in the full www… then it sometimes works but usually if I send someone a link it almost never works.

I was on a zoom group meeting the other day and multiple people in the meeting wanted to see my website to view some designs. Not one person on any of their desktops could reach the website it just gives an error message. Then when I suggested using their iphones and it worked???

So today I asked Grok to analyze my website and give me feedback and it said the website didnt exist or doesnt have a link landing it to the page (Im paraphrasing).

Initially I was told to wait the 72 hours and it would work itself out. Now a couple months or so later its still not as reliable as I wish it could be.

Is there anything I can do on my end to make this work like my old site?

Also, the reason Im not sharing my website address is the last time I did a few hours after posting my website go attacked and banned. So Im not sure if they ever caught the person who was targeting infinity free websites or if they are still doing it so Im not posting the link for that reason.

Thanks for any ideas! :slightly_smiling_face:

Website URL

(please specify the URL of the site on which you are experiencing the problem)

Error Message

(please share the FULL error message you see, if applicable)

Other Information

(other information and details relevant to your question)

Do you have SSL installed? If not, HTTPS and WWW usually breaks. Also i’m not sure what Grok is but it probably can’t see it due to the security system (the ?i=1 at the end of the url, which is replaced at premium hosting).

Thanks for the reply. Sorry Im not a very tech savvy webdesigner… Is the SSL something we install manually or is that an extra feature you get when you get paid hosting?

If its something that comes with regular infinity hosting and I manually have to install that I dont believe I installed it. Can you explain how to do that?

Strange thing is I put my website together the same way I did the last time but I didnt have these issues with my last website. Nonetheless Im eager to try out this SSL solution your speaking about as this sounds like the exact problem with my site.

Grok is the X app AI that you can ask any questions to. I figured it might know what was wrong with my website before wasting everyones time on here.

I appreciate your help! :slightly_smiling_face:

Infinityfree supports SSL certificates. The following article should help you with that.

Grok likely can’t access your site because of the security system.

It would help a lot if you could share the error message and your website URL. Right now, your post essentially says “some people can only access my website on mobile but get an error on desktop”, and unfortunately that’s not enough information for us to help you with (besides randomly guessing at common issues as users above have done)

Thank you so much for this recommendation! This sounds like exactly the problem my website is having. I will look into these articles you posted. Thanks again!

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, its been on others computers so I cant screen capture the message but next time I run into the error message myself I will screen capture it and post it. Another community member gave me some info on SSL certificates so that might be the issue.

As for me not posting my website address I had mentioned it was because someone was on here targeting peoples websites when they listed there website addresses a couple months ago. My last website was working fine but once I listed my website address it was attacked relentlessly and then banned. So unfortunately because of that now Im not trusting to post the link publicly as Im not sure if that troll is still harming peoples websites.

I just looked into my website account after reading and watching the recommendations you posted. Thank you.

Clearly, this is exactly what the problem is with the website as it says theres no certificates for the account. The strange thing is the last website I had I didnt do this as well and it worked perfectly.

I havent yet selected create certificate because I feel way out of my league with how to do that even with the instructions. It was asking what kind of hosting etc on the video and I just didnt want to mess anything up.

The video made it easier to see that this is the problem with the site but Im unsure of what kind of website it is like the video suggests I should know.

Do you have any recommendations on how to get through this SSL certification without knowing anything about what kind of account I have?

I appreciate you mentioning this on the post because clearly this is the problem my website has been dealing with, at least now I know whats going on.

That is probably since most free website hosts automaticially force HTTPS, this is not the case on InfinityFree due to many inactive accounts that would need new certs.

Unless you brought premium hosting you should have a free account. Also i just checked the video, here are some points:

  1. There is no screen to select the provider anymore, it just defaults to “Reccomended” and can be changed in Advanced Settings where you need to input the domain link
  2. InfinityFree subdomains can click the “Setup CName record” button instead of going to control panel
  3. You don’t even need to copy the Private key and stuffz, once again you can click a simple button

I would reccomend you reading the instructions instead.

Sorry for the late reply havent got back to my computer in a few days. Ok, thank you for that clarification and help, I appreciate it a lot!

Thank you!

Thank you. I just went and requested the free certificate. Since I do have a free infinity account with infinity prefix it says destination not ready. I read the instructions and it says if you have a free account it gets the certificate automatically installed. I dont see install certificate automatically as Im guessing I have to wait a couple days.

There is an option to set up CNAME record but since I dont have an independent account I didnt want to click on that.

Are there any recommendations at this point or is it best I just leave it alone and check back on it in a few days?

Thanks for your help!

I’m sorry, but I think you misunderstand a few things about how the SSL certificate process works.

To be clear: there is a button you can click that handles the installation for you. This is easier than the “manual” approach of copying and pasting the private key and certificate from the SSL Certificates pages to the hosting account. However, it still requires you to click the button to do it.

The reason you don’t have an option to install the certificate is because you don’t have a certificate yet. The certificate must be issued first before you can install it.

This requires a little bit of waiting yes, but that should be hours, not days. And, very importantly: it requires a few more button clicks to move the process along.

To be able to request the certificate, you must have the CNAME record shown configured on your domain name. This can be done in two ways:

  • Manually configure the CNAME DNS record shown in your domain’s nameservers.
  • Use the “Setup CNAME Record” button to automatically configure the CNAME configure the record in our nameservers.

Since you are using a free subdomain, it means you are using our nameservers, which means the second option is the vastly easier one. But, as with everything else, you must click the button for anything to happen.

My recommendation is to read the instruction shown on the page, and to read our documentation.

And if there is a big, prominently displayed button that’s available to click, that usually means that we want to bring that button to your attention because we believe it’s relevant to you. In other words: if there is a big button, you should probably click it.

And most importantly, don’t just leave for a few days and expect expect everything to figure itself out on its own. It won’t. Things rarely do.

If you leave it at this state (the order is created by nothing else has been done), in a few days everything will be exactly as you left it, and you’ll have just as little HTTPS support on your website as you do now.

Thank you so much. I normally can figure things out so quickly but web design and all of this I have zero knowledge on so I really feel out in the woods. Thank you for the reassurance!

Hi, I looked into my account and applied the install for the SSL certificate so I hope I did the different steps correctly. I noticed it said the certificate expires 7-2025. Why do certificates expire and why do they last such a short amount of time. I would have thought once installed they last until you dont have a website anymore?

This is my first experience with these certificates as Ive never heard of them before.

In short, it expires due to security reasons.

In more detail, take a look at this:

By the way, once it expires (or even before it expires, InfinityFree will send you multiple emails about the expiry), you can always install a new one.
