I’m not putting this under hosting support as it’s too broad a problem. I wanted to upload a new page to my site, but can’t get through to the file manager as Norton is blocking it.
Norton doesn’t seem to have any way to override a block on a site. When my site was hosted elsewhere (before the money ran out), I used to upload pages to it straight from Windows, but I didn’t manage to get that working here, so I was relying on File Manager instead. Has anyone manged to upload pages to an infinityfree-hosted site direct from Windows?
Then you should read the category description again. Anything that’s hosting related goes under Hosting Support. Issues which are not specific to an individual hosting account doesn’t make them any less hosting related.
And you wouldn’t be the first one to claim that there is a problem with the whole hosting platform while they are the only one affected by it.
I’m sorry, but we can’t fix restrictions on your device or network which prevents you from using our service properly.
This is clearly a false positive on Norton’s part, but we have no business relation with them. If you are a Norton customer and Norton is preventing you from doing what you want to do, then you will need to take that up with Norton yourself.
That’s precisely why I didn’t put it in here as a hosting support issue: the problem is with Norton and you can’t fix that. It is not a fault with your hosting platform. If necessary, I’ll fix the problem by disabling Norton in task manager every time I want to upload files.
Before I try that though, I’m looking for any possible alternative that doesn’t involve installing any extra bloatware on my struggling machine, which is why I asked if anyone’s managed to get direct uploads to their website here from windows working. It appears that no one has managed that, so temporarily disabling Norton looks like the best option.
Thanks for the advice. I went with Filezilla (having been put off in the past by a suggestion that it was bundled with junk, which is why I previously just stuck with file manager, but the download looked clean this time). Anyway, four entries at the top and I was in - file uploaded. I was surprised at how easy the process was.
There have been bad copies of FileZilla which bundled harmful software. The official installer also bundles some crap, but if you pay attention during the installation, nothing but FileZilla itself will be installed.
Although, in my experience, the impact of virus scanners on background system load are much greater than any other software I’ve used. I’m not sure how lightweight Norton is, but that’s just something to consider.
