Need Help Buying a .id Domain from Outside Indonesia

I’m currently outside of Indonesia, but I’m interested in buying a .id domain to help my website rank better locally in Indonesia. My competitor’s site is written in Indonesian but uses a generic domain extension, so I want to go one step ahead by using a .id ccTLD.

Someone suggested using registrars like Porkbun, but they seem expensive and also require an Indonesian passport or ID, which I don’t have.

Is there any affordable and reliable way to register a .id domain without living in Indonesia or having local documents? Any help or registrar recommendations would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Checking the website of the .id registry, it seems that different rules exist for different third level domains. co.id domains for example require Indonesian documentation including a password. But second level registrations (like example.id) are open to anyone as far as I can tell.

It doesn’t say there that passports are required. Maybe they are still required. If so, this is most likely a registry rule, and registrars are required to obtain that information, without exception, and you may not be able to obtain a domain without it. Perhaps some registrars offer a trustee service to provide the documentation on your behalf, but that’s usually a service you have to pay for.

Porkbun is typically pretty competitive in their pricing, and a quick look at tld-list.com shows they are definitely one of the cheaper options. Sure, $18 is more expensive than typical .com domain pricing, but still not that crazy in terms of pricing. There are plenty of extensions that cost a lot more than that. Some of the domains we use for free subdomains cost hundreds of dollars per year.

Perhaps you can find better pricing with a local registrar, they are sometimes cheaper for the TLD of their own country.
