I want to move my domain name from the old hosting company, Network Solutions, to InfinityFree. Currently, there are 2 sites up and running: my original site with Network Solutions and the new, rebranded website I just built on InfinityFree using WordPress.
Here is some basic information:
Network Solutions = old hosting where thefearlessfloydshow(dot)com currently lives.
Domain(dot)com = my domain registrar, where I pay for my domain name
InfinityFree = my new hosting created a new rebranded website, thefearlessfloydshow(dot)ct(dot)ws
I’ve seen the video on how to add a new domain name to InfinityFree - I do not want to rebuild this site, and I basically need to change the site name from .ct.ws to .com. I have researched this and have read that I need to assign it to the same folder as your .ct.ws site (usually /htdocs).
I am looking for the process on how to do this. I still need to contact Domain.com and Network Solutions to figure out how I need to do this on their end.
Do you have any documentation or videos that I can review to make sure I can move the domain name and add the domain name to the website I have created here?
Thank you for any help you can offer. I do not find a contact email to address this question to.
You can back up your site, and then move it into the folder of the new domain name once it’s added to InfinityFree.
Then since you’re using WordPress, you’ll have to change the URL in your WordPress configuration.
If it were a static site you could do this by just adding the .com domain as a parked domain, but since you’re using WordPress it’s far easier and safer to fully migrate it to the new URL.
It appears that I should do a backup of the new website I have created with WordPress. Since I will be adding a custom domain name to my account, I need to have a backup of the htdocs folder so I can copy this folder to the new custom domain name once it has been created.
Thank you for your reply. Do you have any sugesstions what the best plugin is to use to make a backup of my current website before I move the domain name?
The best way to do it is not to use a plugin at all. The most reliable way to do it is to back up the files and database manually. Backup plugins are simply too fragile and hit InfinityFree’s PHP time limits too frequently.
You can perform the backup before or after you add the custom domain name, as long as it’s before you delete the subdomain.
It is too late for all of this now. I have major issues, and the backup files will not load again. My htdoc folder for WordPress was completely deleted. The idiot who moved all this really screwed it all up. I think the only solution to fix this mess is to delete the htdoc folder again, reinstall WordPress, and move forward by rebuilding my website. To fix this right I may need to delete my account, start over and add my domian name again.
You may close this. I have resolved it myself. Thank you for answering me. I have the site now migrated to the custom domain name. Great support and suggestions.
