Why is not possible to load a google font? I am using twenty-twentyfour block theme, and trying to install\ a font (using standard procedure Appearance → Editor → Styles → edit styles → manage font) I only get to the panel with the list of the theme fonts, whereas the Upload and Install buttons are missing.

Does WordPress even have this feature? I tested it on another WordPress site and I don’t see it either.

A quick Google search pointed me to this question on the WordPress forum where they basically said it’s not part of the standard theme and requires additional plugins to work:

Maybe this question is more suitable on the WordPress community? Most of us are not WordPress experts. If there is a hosting issue, then we can help, but I can’t tell if this issue is caused by our hosting at all, let alone what we would need to change to fix it.

Since WordPress 6.5, loading Google Fonts directly onto the server is a core feature in the block editor and doesn’t requires plugins.

But then, if you are using a different version (even if you already upgraded it, as sometimes WordPress won’t upgrade between major versions, so you might end up having something like 6.4.4), of course it won’t work.

The reason I am asking here is because the “feature” works (I am using wordpress 6.5.3) withourt any problem on different hosting providers, e.g. Hetzner, and also using a local test server like xampp or laragon. Therefore, i thought it was due to some settings of the hosting, but apparently I was wrong. Thank you for your kind attention.
PS Just for completeness, there is another strange topic: selecting block “site logo”, you are NOT presented with the option of loading an image from the library or uploading an image: you get stuck with an empty rectangle. Again, this does not happen with local server or other hosting.

Don’t rush to conclusions. Admin is not a WordPress expert, as he already stated in his own reply.

While I was also no where near a WordPress expert, I do suspect a hosting issue. I’ve already seen plenty topics complaining about how block editor doesn’t work properly here.

Unfortunately, I cannot fix it, as I have 0 access to the internal systems.

As far as I can tell, it depends on the theme. And the TwentyTwentyFour theme does not have this feature. TwentyTwentyThree, or other themes, may have this.

I also tested this on another WordPress site on another hosting, and didn’t see any difference compared to our hosting.

Does this other site you’re testing on use the same theme?

Same story. Happens to me too, it doesn’t seem to work here or elsewhere, I have no idea how it’s supposed to work and I think it’s dependent on the theme.

Searching for the issue online, I also see some suggestions saying that this issue can be caused by caching plugins. The other site I tried also had a caching plugin. Does your site have one too? If so, you may try disabling that one and see if it helps.

Just to clarify. I have a (amateurish??) site built a couple of years ago using a “classic” theme. I am now trying to modernize it with a block theme (yes, yes I know: if something works, don’t touch it!!!; but i like to learn something). So I imported the site under laragon and infinity, working in parallel, but using same wordpress release (6.5.3) and same theme /twenty-twenty four). That is how I detected the different behavior of the two hosting environments. So, twenty-twentyfour works fine in laragon, but does not work in infinity. Of course, I may be making some mistakes (I admit being a rookie)., so I will go back to square one and begin from scratch. But this is the situatiion now.
Again, thanks a lot for your interest and patience.

And as far as I can tell, there’re no special theme.json configuration, or add_theme_support requirements. A theme can indeed use related hooks, but the hooks are used to disable such support, not enabling them.
Despite that, it makes 0 sense for WordPress’ flagship block theme to not have this feature.

And guess what, if you check the WordPress official site you’ll realize that they’re demostrating the font feature with the TwentyTwentyFour theme.

I’m more willing to assume that you might be checking a WP 6.5 feature with something like 6.4.4, or some plugins interfering with the font library.
