I have a WordPress site that is hosted by Infinity Free. I tried to update WordPress to version 5.3 and also some plugins plus my theme. Every time each update got stuck and would not go any further. I had to get out of the maintenance mode in order to go back to my site.
Are you experiencing some difficulties? I would not want to attempt the updates again until you let me know that all is fine.
Upgrading a piece of software is an inherently complex task, especially when that upgrade needs to be performed from within the software to be updated. On any web hosting service, the provider needs to set sensible limits to prevent people from overloading the servers, and this goes doubly so for free hosting.
WordPress has done a good job of making their updater as stable as they can make it, but that doesnât mean itâs unbreakable.
For as long as I can remember, you could tell when WordPress released a new version by the number of people asking for help on here with a corrupted WordPress site. Right now is no exception.
So the fact that some upgrades fail is nothing new, and nothing we can truly prevent from happening. But there are a large number of requests this time around, and I do intend to verify for myself that upgrades can actually work.
If you donât want to wait for me, you can try another installation method. I see Softaculous offers WordPress 5.3 as well. So if your site is managed through Softaculous, you can use Softaculous to upgrade your site instead (which is safer). And if your site is not managed yet, you may be able to import it.
If that doesnât work, you could still attempt a manual upgrade. A manual upgrade is quite easy too: just download a new copy of WordPress and upload it on top of your existing site. After that, you can complete the upgrade through the WordPress admin interface.
So to answer your question: to my knowledge, our systems are working exactly as intended.
Hi Guys,
I have the same issue with updating to version 5.3 or the new theme (specifically wp extra plugin/ theme).
I donât know where is the problem started I just installed the new theme (wp extra) and update to version 5.3 then my subdomain wonât load and sayâs âthe site is experiencing technical difficultiesâ then I canât access my wp dashboard. I have read the wordpress support topics and there is a topic on how to disable all the plugins through FTP or file manager by rename the folder âPluginâ to âPlugin_old or Plugin.holdâ (from htdocs/wp-content/plugins) then manually update the plugins and rename the folder back to Plugins. How can I manually update the plugins when I canât access the wp dashboard? or is there any other way to do it when I canât access my wp dashboard?
Please note that Iâm just new to wordpress and currently studying how to build one and I have no idea with coding.
Thank you for your continuous guidance and support.
I am having dreadful difficulties with any upgrade be it WordPress or plugins or theme. Each of these upgrades gets stuck and is not going any further. Like MikeNewTo I get a message saying that the site is experiencing technical difficulties. As I am an experienced user of WordPress I was able to get out of maintenance mode but then my site was completely messed up, so I had to replace plugins and the theme via FTP. Now I have a problem backing up my site before attempting yet anither WordPress upgrade via Softaculous - the backup is not moving on, it is stuck at 1%. When I attempt to get in via cpanel to check on the backup in the Backups location (as advised by the system) it keeps saying that my username/ password is incorrect. This is most frustrating.
Please read my reply to admin - I am now scared to attempt anything. I donâ[t know what to do now as I am not sure if the backup is going on or not. I cannot even try the upgrade via Softaculous if the matter of the Backup is not cleared up. And yes, I did install WordPress via Softaculous.
WordPress upgrades its version by downloading the zip file from its official site then put that file to upload folder in wp-content folder as temporary file. Then the file will be deleted after unzip its contents.
The problem is that zip file size more than 10 MB. This hosting doesnât allow the file size more than 10 MB: https://infinityfree.net/support/what-is-the-fileupload-size-limit/
Thatâs why many people in here have same problem (stuck) like this because of that limit.
Not just WordPress, I guess. Many CMS have size more than 10 MB.
If you upgrade it manually, you can upload the files as part by part so the zip size isnât exceed 10 MB.
I never try it. But many people in here already install WordPress successfully via Softaculous. I think it has different installation method & no problem at all.
I think I have to be very careful regarding any updates. I tried to download the WordPress files via FTP to do my own backup and even that failed.
I wonder if anyone could explain to me what âStagingâ means from the InfinityFreeâs point of view? Is this for creating a test version of the same site?
Thank you in advance.
Wonderful, thatâs what i thought the Staging would be for. I am surprised that Admin would not know that. Anyway, your link will help me to follow all instructions without messing anything up. Many thanks!
I donât know, too. I donât know Softaculous having feature like that now.
Last time I clicked Softaculous on cPanel menu maybe 3-4 years ago when I didnât know anything about web installation.
please let me know once you have checked the updating/downloading issue (not only with WordPress but plugins and theme as well which I have been experiencing). Thank you.
