I would have thought that typing the IP address into the browser would take me to my new site even if the DNS servers are not yet updated but it doesn’t

No issue, try using a VPN to see if that helps.

Because this is shared hosting. IP address are not “more authoritive” than domains, and is shared between many websites here, so it is expected to not work this way.

Besides, the fact that your browser already got the IP is strong proof that nothing is wrong on the DNS side.

What must I do?

You could try a VPN. Or wait for DNS propagation to complete. There’s a large (ish) red banner at the top of the page in your dashboard that tells you that can take up to 72 hours

Or if you’re desperate, you could change your host file, which Meishin describes in this post:

If you absolutely must access your website because you are more comfortable with the website admin panel instead of FTP, Client Area, etc, there’s a very limited workaround you could try: On Windows Steps for Windows On macOS Steps for macOS This method is called editing the hosts file and only works on your computer. You cannot do this on your phone. You must redo the steps above if you wish to make this work on another computer, which may fail if it’s a public one.

Be aware that editing your host file will only work for you. everyone else will have to wait until DNS propergation has completed.
