Error Message

Hello, I need assistance with my old website, spark-platform.free.je. Could you please confirm whether the file spark-platform-password.key, created by PHP in sys_get_temp_dir(), still exists after I moved the website? Is there a secure way to retrieve it, or to check whether the temporary directory has been cleared?

Welcome to the InfinityFree community forum! Good to have you here.

  • Most people answering here are volunteers. They’re often the fastest source of help. Admin (the only staff member) checks in about once a day for issues on our end.
  • Volunteers can’t see your account or website. Share what you actually see, like error messages and what happens when you try something. That’s more useful than your theory of what’s wrong.
  • AI tools often get InfinityFree wrong. If a volunteer’s advice differs from what an AI told you, please try the volunteer’s suggestion first.
  • Solving an issue is a joint effort. Try the suggestions you get and report back what happened.

Beep boop, I’m a bot! I dug through the forum to get you started. I sometimes get things wrong though, so do with this what you will until a human has a look.

Where did you move the website to? Do you mean from the free.je account to another InfinityFree account, such as the one you created the same day, or to a different host?

I’m asking because the answer depends on which account’s PHP the file was written under. I also can’t find anything that says whether files in PHP’s temporary directory are kept or cleared here, so I can’t confirm that spark-platform-password.key still exists.

What does your code use that file for? If it holds a password or encryption key, knowing that will show whether it can be recreated or has to be recovered.

moved the website from an InfinityFree free hosting account to a different paid hosting provider. The new website is https://spark.a-tThe key is used by my PHP application to decrypt the students’ password_encrypted values so the teacher can view them. The application also stores password hashes for login. The key was automatically created in PHP’s sys_get_temp_dir() because I had not configured a separate key.

I have a backup of the database, and it contains the encrypted values, but I could not find the key in the website files. Is there any way to recover that temporary key from my old InfinityFree account, or confirm whether temporary files are cleared?har.casa.

No. There isn’t a serverside backup. so if you don’t have the key, and it’s not on your accouint, then it’s been lost

The key part to understand is that the key was created in the sys_get_temp_dir(), which is the system’s temporary directory.

If you know the name of the key file, you can try to read the file from the temp dir using PHP code. However, since it’s still a temporary directory, it does get cleaned up, so there is no guarantee that the file still exists there.

Without the file name, there is not much we can do. There is no way to browse the temporary directory, and hunting for a file with unknown names or contents is not something we can do for you.

I don’t know how the temporary directory actually gets cleaned up and I have no way to check. With the file name, you can check yourself. Without it, you aren’t able to access the file even if it does exist.
