If you are using one of the free domains (great-site.net) is it possible to have your site using HTTPS, or is this only possible if you are using your own domain?

I tried that already, but when you come to paste the destination value into CNAME it comes back with an error (string too long or something like that from memory). I thought it might be because i don’t own the domain. As there will be many users with the domain great-site.net can each user setup a new SSL cert?

This sounds like you are doing it wrongly.
Please provide more information.

Hey there you can indeed setup free SSL for your free domain. the error you are seeing is likely you have an extra space in that destination string. to make sure you have no extra spaces, just double click on that destination string and copy it then paste it into your CNAME destination field.

I’ve got it working now. I think the problem was that i thought the domain name was just the great-site.net bit, but its actually the full website name.

Thanks

If you did it correctly, you shouldn’t have to enter any CNAME record at all. During the SSL setup process, it should offer you the ability to setup the CNAME record for you.

If you didn’t get that option, it usually means that made a typo in your domain name. On the CNAME record screen, you’ll also see a red banner saying the domain name is not assigned to your hosting account.

In the future, you can make it easier for your self by going ignoring the “Free SSL Certificates” option in the main menu, and instead go to Accounts → your account → your domain → Manage SSL Certificate.
