It could also be that the sitemap may not exist.

Either way, a sitemap isn’t needed for Google Search Console, Googlebot can find your site structure without one.

I checked the URL being referenced in the screenshot, but it doesn’t appear to return a sitemap for me, I just see a list of articles there.

Do note that Google is not instant. You cannot refresh the search console page and expect immediate changes. Instead, you must wait until Google decides to check your site again and update the status.
