Other Information
Quick one for UK members (amd possibly other countries) who use virgin media. For some reason they have decided that the free.nf is a risky domain.
You can get around this by turning off virus safe. But if you want others to be able to access your site might be worth looking to alternative sub domains.
Just wanted to share
–edit–
I wonder if this related to the issues I’ve had with ftp too…
The issue with virgin media security and google safe browsing among others is that they don’t realize that infinityfree subdomains each host 1000’s of websites
When they receive a report about a single bad website on one of the subdomains they just block the entire subdomain instead of the actual single bad website which causes any website on the same subdomain to be flagged as bad
This is not just an issue for infinityfree but any hosting company that provides the same kind of service will also suffer, virgin, google and others need to update their blacklist systems as they are currently incompatible with the web and are blocking innocent websites
If you do see issues like this, please also make sure to report this issue to the ISP. They are incorrectly blocking you from accessing thousands of legitimate websites, and that’s a problem they need to fix.
Virgin Media might be blocking free.nf today, but not other subdomains. But they might also block other domains tomorrow. Other ISPs might be blocking other subdomains already, but not free.nf.
If you want to make sure that your site is unaffected, your best bet is to get your own domain name. The noisy neighbor effect is unfortunately an inherent issue with free subdomains.
Oh I have… And the guy I spoke to told me that I should turn off virus safe. And that there is nothing they can do to stop it happening.
I’ve actually raised a complaint now with them. But not holding my breath. Virgin media are well known for braking the rules and then ignoring you when you complain. But deep pockets goes a long way with the ombudsman
Once I’m back in work in intend to (redundencies confirmed on friday… ugh). The only reason I found out VM were blocking me, is because I was applying for a job, and a potential employer couldn’t access my site.
That said, I’ve applied for a eu.org domain, if that comes in any time soon might help.
