The website opens normally in my browser, but Meta’s Facebook Sharing Debugger returns an HTTP 418 Bad Response Code when trying to scrape the homepage.
Because of this, Facebook cannot retrieve my Open Graph metadata, and the website preview does not show the correct title, description, or image.
Could you please help me determine why Meta’s crawler is receiving HTTP 418 and whether this restriction can be resolved on my hosting plan?
Welcome to the InfinityFree community forum! Good to have you here.
Most people answering here are volunteers. They’re often the fastest source of help. Admin (the only staff member) checks in about once a day for issues on our end.
Volunteers can’t see your account or website. Share what you actually see, like error messages and what happens when you try something. That’s more useful than your theory of what’s wrong.
AI tools often get InfinityFree wrong. If a volunteer’s advice differs from what an AI told you, please try the volunteer’s suggestion first.
Solving an issue is a joint effort. Try the suggestions you get and report back what happened.
Beep boop, I’m a bot! I dug through the forum to get you started. I sometimes get things wrong though, so do with this what you will until a human has a look.
This looks like InfinityFree’s browser security system, which is on every free hosting account. It checks that a visitor can run JavaScript and accept cookies, and Facebook’s crawler can’t do either. The knowledge base article lists link previews for Facebook, WhatsApp, Discord and X as something that doesn’t work, because the Open Graph tags are never read. An older topic with the same 418 in Facebook’s debugger was answered with this same explanation.
The check covers every URL and can’t be turned off for one path, user agent or IP address. Using your own domain doesn’t change that, and the article says the check is mandatory on free hosting. The page doesn’t contain a workaround for link previews. The article says premium hosting protects your site with less restrictive methods, so automated tools work normally there.
Here’s the article:
And here’s the earlier topic with the same 418 in Facebook’s debugger:
Your site opening fine in your browser fits this, since a real browser passes the check. Your Open Graph tags may be perfectly correct. Facebook just can’t get to them.
