managing that many certs is too complicated. Why I cant just use a single * cert?

It makes no sense that wildcard certificates cant be used.

Its just one of the restrictions on the free hosting. Since it sounds like you’re using a custom domain, you may want to look at the SSL options they have. I’ve not tried, but I think that they do support wildcards

The system checks whether the name in the certificate matches the website you’re installing it on exactly. That’s how the system has been implemented.

Having a check to prevent obviously invalid certificates from being uploaded is a useful feature to have. But whoever built this functionality in the control panel either didn’t think about wildcard certificates, didn’t want to implement support for them, or just didn’t bother to do so.

Keep in mind that we want to support wildcards properly, then you shouldn’t have to install the certificate on every subdomain individually. But that would make the whole SSL management system quite a bit more complicated.

Would it be better if they were supported? Absolutely. Is it nonsensical that they aren’t? No, there are perfectly valid reasons to limit the scope of a feature.
