Correct. I want to have confidence that the domain will stay up before allowing new registrations. I want to provide subdomains that work, so if I don’t have certainty that the domain will keep working, I do not want people to setup domains.
The other side effect is that if the registry is being difficult with abuse, then the last thing I want is more abusive sites to pop up. And disabling registration on the subdomain is very effective for that.
It’s a pity that Nominet don’t give a list of sites that it has been receiving complaints about so that you could ban them. It’s a shame you have this problem from spammers when you’re providing a damn good free service.
They did actually provide a spreadsheet with a number of URLs that had been reported to them. There were a few live URLs, a few URL that were already taken down recently (and presumably are what motivated them to take action), but also many of them were taken down long ago.
But usually registries don’t just want to take down current bad sites, but also take precautions to prevent further abuse. And that’s typically where the problems begin, because that’s very hard to do more than we already do.
Also, I’m unpinning the topic. The domain is back up again, but I will keep trying to talk to Nominet to get a better sense of the future of the domain name.
Out of interest, I had a quick look at the websites that were using .infy.uk. I can’t believe how many were businesses and a fair few were ecommerce. Really can’t understand some people’s mentality. Who on earth would rely on free web space to run a business? Some were even web developer websites! I thought they would all be charity, club or family sites etc.
Perhaps you should ban all ecommerce sites as I would imagine that’s where a lot of the scams go on.
At the moment my ecommerce site is hosted here. But that’s because I’m still in the process of building my brand\getting customers. Once I’m fully established I intend to move to premium hosting

We have nothing that suggests that this is actually the case. There are many fraudulent sites of course, but reports about fraudulent ecommerce sites are very rare.
Please also understand that not every site might be “serious”. I can totally imagine many people just try to setup the ecommerce site as a hobby project, just to see how it would work and what they could do, which is a completely valid, legal thing to do.
Just because it looks like a business site doesn’t mean it’s a business site. It might just be someone playing and learning.
But that’s a very different case. Now you’re not just talking about ecommerce site, you’re specifically talking about sites impersonating Amazon. That’s a very different situation.
