I love creating websites and exploring the world of the web, not because its fun (Although it is), but because of all the things I learn, and how much my actions have changes because of it.
The amount of information someone can see on you is scary, and although ad and tracker blockers claim to block trackers (And they do work), admins can still see everything anyways.
For example, if a user enters my website using an ad-blocker, tracker-blocker, etc, then submits the contact form on my website, they think cannot track them, right? Well, no. Although it is harder for me to do so (As my form tracker is blocked by the users extension) it is still possible, and I can do it in less then 3 minutes.
How? Well every visitor to a website is logged on the server, and since my website (And therefore all my visitors) get run though Cloudflare, Cloudflare also gets a log of everything, a log that I can view. So lets think about that person who though they were āuntraceableā because of all their security. They submitted a form, right? And that forms answers have a timestamp on them when they come to me, right? And there is a specific file that sends that response, right? So lets just open the logs, locate the file, and compare the time. Easy. Now I can get all that info on the āuntraceableā person.
What if that person did not submit the form, but just browsed around? Well, I wouldnāt really care to track them, but if I did, I could just take the info from other analytic programs and the back-end logs and run a program to compare the two. Anyone that shows up on the back-end logs, but not the other one must be āhiddenā. So out of curiosity, lets just bring those full back-end logs back up, locate those people on them, and see what they did!
Now think of every single website out there that uses Cloudflare. In my mind, I think about 60% of the people who use it actually use it for information and the such. So in your daily life, my guess that 80-90% of the websites you visit track you to that extent. Now really think about that.
What can you see about them?
I donāt know much about tracker blockers, but a quick google (no google, im not talking about train tracks smh) tells me that they just block domains that are known to track you.
Heck, I can use GA or another third party analytics (like you said), or even my own script to get info like your IP or something.
Trackers are really only useful for things like ad services which may sell data to sketchy sites.
Wait wat, where is the CF log??
Lots. Lots. Lots. Basically everything that your browsers sends to the server, I can see (See my PM).
That is basically what they do.
And that works awesomely until your users have an ad-blocker or GA-blocker. Then you get no info, and your data is weird since not everything is logged.
Or are useful to people that just want to know what their visitors do.
Itās a hidden feature (For obvious reasons), you have to use an external service to actually bring it to a level where you can read it.
I meant anti-trackers, sorry
Send me a pm also.
Gotta love the character in the vid (flashing lights warning - I say this because this is the first time that I remember to state that XD).
That, and IDK if it matters, the awesome music.
Gotta love Kayzo
happy 2sday!
Yay!
Did anyone take a minute to look at the clock at 2:22 on 2/22/22 (OR 22/2/22)? Oh yea, itās also a tuesday!
Sadly, I did not.
I woulda screamed it if I did.
My first monthly journalism school article (they ask that we do at least one school and at least one personal).
This is not 100% finalized yet; tell me what you think!
A Shortened Month Leads to Shortened Stories - Chaos in the Journalism Class
At the time I began writing this (February 23rd), the journalism class, after 6 days of being apart, came together today for a chaotic session. It started off as a unanimous agreement of chaos - we lost a class to a snow day and lost another one to a planned day off. To make matters worse, some interviews necessary for stories were delayed due to absent people or busy schedules. I had reached out to a teacher to talk about the CBI-Covid collision to get a response, but presently no date was finalized. I had also reached out to a member in the tech department for an interview regarding a personal story about technology but to no avail. It seems as if the journalism class this month is on the brink of being torn to pieces, as we scramble to change our plans, leaping over the problematic hurdles thrown at us. This time though, we struggled through many and instead of finishing the metaphoric race of success in a record time representing greatness, we merely fell down a mindset, attempting to simply finish instead.
However, the Journalism class is not done for yet! As we met today we discussed plans to shorten our stories to be flexible with the awkward month. It was frantic and confusing, but we slowly worked out the kinks and started gaining momentum again. So as you read stories and possibly come across a short one, donāt see it as cheap material, but rather as a narrowly victorious battle between journalism class and a whirlwind of a month.
'Few clarifications:
Journalism is basically a news class. We publish papers for the school, as well as weekly announcements (each of us posts things on a given day. Mine, for instance, is shared with another classmate for Monday).
A CBI stands for community based instruction; basically, it is a field trip
Unanimous - look it up in the dictionary, nubs.
My WhatsApp was flooded with this image:
