Are we debating the difference between a debate and an argument now? (Or are we arguing over the difference?)
As a non-native english speaker, I cannot say.
Not even an argument, I was just stating the difference.
But if it was either an argument or debate, Iād have to say a debate.
A debate is kind of like an argument, but it is formal and usually as a ācompetitionā.
For instance, you might ādebateā whether is better - Cats or Dogs.
Instead of saying āDogs are better, No cats! Dogs, Cats!ā, you might set up a specific amount of time for each person to present their opinions. Then they listen to the other person when they are speaking.
Thatās a bit more for competition though, a debate is more or less a more in-depth argument (without insults and such).
