Webpages not found - but index.html is

I am falling at the first hurdle here. Well almost first.

I uploaded a file called index.html, and when I go to my domain (… .net/), there it is. But if I try to add a filename to the URL (… .net/index.html or … .net/index), it fails, and I get a “404 Not Found” error.

Clearly the file is in the right place and has the right name given it is shown without the filename in the URL. So what is going on?

Hello and welcome to the community! I can see your site and the file index.html without problem. Please note URLs are case sensitive. The file “index.html” in every root directory or subdirectory is automatically interpreted by your browser, so no need to type explicitly. However, if you need to type the individual file be sure to type the complete filename and filename extension. In your case, “index.html“ and “index2.html“ work but mere “index“ will not, hence the error. I’m not sure if https://panddmrs.great-site.net/index.html still results an error, but does the error appear even in incognito mode or another browser?

Thanks for the reply.
I was using the filename just to check it would work - obviously I need to do that for all other pages, so it has to work for that one.
I was aware it is case sensitive; I am only using lower case.

I do not know why, but it is now working. I am not doing anything different, so no idea why!
