Hello there, after the new file manager update I’m unable to compress or unzip files in the file manager, can a user choose to use the legacy file manager? or is there is a workaround that you guys do to unzip your files after the new file manager is here.
There is no function to zip and unzip files on the server. But you can upload a zip file, which is then extracted by the file manager and the extracted contents uploaded, and you can download multiple files and directories, which will be provided to your as a zip file.
Would that work for your needs?
No. The old file manager was very broken and will not be offered again.
If there are features that are missing from the new file manager, we can add it. Bringing back old, broken software for specific functionality is not the kind of solution we will consider.
Hi thanks for your response, no worries I built a simple php app to zip and unzip files. For the features missing — if available I’d like to see a fix for this issue:
- When selecting a file/directory, the file manager should enter in “Select mode” so when clicking on another file’s/directory’s name would NOT EDIT/OPEN it but rather SELECT it, It’s common for me to have like 15 selected files and then click on a directory by mistake because I missed the selection box by 2 pixels, if this is a lot of work then at least add a dead zone around the select checkbox to avoid such scenarios.
also the zip and unzip functionalities would be cool and cut regular users a lot of time.
Can you please elaborate on why zipping and unzipping files on the server is preferable to downloading and uploading zip files? I cannot think of any reason why doing it on the server is better, but I’d love to hear why people think differently.
Good suggestion, that makes sense to change! I’ll relay it upstream.
For me, in some scenarios I’d have a zip file on the server (that are not downloaded through the file manager) and need some specific files that are inside it to be out somewhere on the server, so instead of downloading and reuploading to be offered the unzip function it would be nice to simply have an unzip button.
Can you elaborate how that zip file came to be on the server in that scenario? I get that if there is a zip file on the server, it’s easier to let the file manager do everything rather than download+reupload. But I find it hard to imagine a scenario where you’d have that zip file on the server, where you don’t already have that zip file on your computer because you downloaded it from somewhere and then uploaded it first without extracting it.
