Other Information
I’ve set up Cloudflare for my five custom domains within the hosting account’s website, sandhillcrane.42web.io — but I’m unable to set up Cloudflare for sandhillcrane.42web.io itself as the “Full Guide to Cloudflare” instructs in Step 7.
Cloudflare doesn’t accept that sandhillcrane.42web.io as a valid domain, returning “Please ensure you are providing the root domain and not any subdomains.” I do know how to access the DNS records for sandhillcrane.42web.io
So, how do I set up Cloudflare for sandhillcrane.42web.io ? And, what’s the best code for the .htaccess files for each of my custom domains to enhance security and turn away bots?
You can of course try and setup some code to “block” bots. But you need to understand that a “blocked” request still consumes server resources and count towards your limits. 50,000 bots hammering your website even if you “block” them with .htaccess still lead to a suspension.
Instead of messing around with .htaccess you should probably start looking into if Cloudflare has any settings that gives you better security.
Thanks. I’ll look into enabling the “under attack” setting for my custome domains on Cloudflare. I looked at that setting briefly and recall there was a warning about it being an extreme measure.
Cloudflare does not support hosting only subdomains with them, and we do not support changing the nameservers of subdomains, so using Cloudflare on a free subdomain is not possible.
Also, while Cloudflare can help a bit with hits usage, it’s not a perfect solution. If you’re hitting the limit now, then just adding Cloudflare may not be enough. Especially if most websites on the account are already using Cloudflare.
However, looking at your profile, I see you have only one hosting account with five custom domains. One thing that might help address your hits usage is to move some of those websites to dedicated accounts. Every hosting account has a limit of 50,000 hits, and you can have up to three hosting accounts. So by spreading those websites across different accounts (ideally based on their traffic, the busiest websites benefit most from a dedicated account), your websites together will be able to handle more traffic.
