Hi and welcome to the forum! Maybe your WordPress installation is corrupted:
WordPress frequently releases updates, which you can install through WordPress’ admin interface. Usually, this works without a hitch. But with some (big) upgrades, the upgrade fails half way and leaves you with a broken website.

You may want to enable WP_DEBUG mode to get the error message of the “critical error”. A more specific error message may help you find a specific solution.
