I ask intellectual questions, but I get dismissal in reply. Why?

Ok, then where is the Bookmarks feature? It would be nice to have it on the left, like this.

You can add it. Use the plus icon to add a custom link. Name it whatever you want and pick an icon. Set the link to https://forum.infinityfree.com/u/progrockfrog/activity/bookmarks

Happy New Year!!!

Very bottom of the sidebar on the right hand side, next to the keyboard icon.

That feature just doesn’t exist.

It just doesn’t make sense to have for a forum.

Please understand that forum software is intended for discussions. Anyone can start a discussion, but that doesn’t automatically make their contributions more valuable than those from others. Different communities use the forum software in different ways (and different even categories within a single forum). And in those different use cases, it can be very different who is the most important person in the topic. Discourse, the forum software that we use, is pretty versatile, but it doesn’t perfectly tailor to every single use case.

You can access the Bookmarks menu by clicking the Profile icon in the top right, and then choose the Bookmarks option there.

You can also add it to the menu on the left yourself. In fact, you can completely customize that menu to look exactly like you want it to.

When you click the More link (shown in your own screenshot), you’ll see the option “Customize this section”. From there, you can add custom links, hide links and change the ordering.

The only sidebar I see is a bar on the left, and at that bottom is “All categories”. There is only a timeline scroll thing like Google photos on the right. Clarity requested.

“Anyone can start a discussion, but that doesn’t automatically make their contributions more valuable than those from others.”

Exactly. That is why I want to designate which posts I get notifications for. Not just all or nothing.

“You can access the Bookmarks menu by clicking the Profile icon in the top right, and then choose the Bookmarks option there.”

If this does what I want it to do, then it would be awesome if we could have that option placed under “My messages” on the left.

“you’ll see the option “Customize this section””

Which I don’t. Please expound.

At the bottom of the sidebar, not in the middle of it.

Ok, this is like getting cheat codes for a video game. Hoorah!!

Next, I have now successfully added “Bookmarks” on the left.

  1. Can this Bookmarks thing be nestled in between “My messages” and “Forum Rules”? Right now I only see a way to have it placed under “More”.
  2. When I added the Bookmarks thing with that weird looking furry hat (bearskin?) thing soldiers wear in front of Buckingham Palace, it asked for an address. What I am looking for is a way to bookmark a user’s reply, not all or nothing in the thread. I could add the URL of the thread, but I was hoping to get “If this user replies again, hit me up, give me that email sensation notification.” Is that possible?

That indeed not a feature, it’s indeed all or nothing on the topic level. You cannot configure notifications for individual people within a topic. The notifications don’t get that granular.

And in my opinion: most topics don’t really live long enough for this level of granularity to really make sense. You’d spend more time tweaking the notifications for every person in every topic than just checking the interesting topics would take you.

I don’t think that’s possible. I was referring to a different option that isn’t actually available to you. I’m sorry for the confusion.

Bookmarks just let you save posts so you can easily find them later, it doesn’t affect the notifications you get from them.

Did you already get a chance to explore the New and Unread tabs I wrote about before? They don’t give you the notifications you want, but they might help make the topics easier to navigate when you are visiting the forum.
