I like the hosting except the speed. Speed sucks. Big time. I’m using WP.
But that’s completely understandable if that’s an artificial limitation, like maybe you’re severely limiting the memory and CPU that’s available for PHP on a free plan.
Is it possible to maybe switch to a Canadian IP rather than UK? Maybe that’s what’s causing the delay?
Since your title and your post doesn’t match, I’ll answer both questions:
Premium hosting have better servers and more resources allocated to you, so it’ll generally be faster. Further inquiries about premium should be send to iFastNet directly.
The only datacenter is in the UK. It’s not possible to have anything besides that.
Premium hosting generally has more powerful servers and definitely has higher limits than free hosting accounts. But account limits tend to affect capacity more than they affect speed. Adding more RAM doesn’t make a website faster, it only means that it can process more requests simultaneously.
Latency does affect page load times somewhat, but is usually only a minor factor for websites. If “speed sucks big time”, that sounds like a bigger issue than just the speed of light across the Atlantic could explain.
But a far, far bigger factor is how your website is setup. WordPress can be lightning fast or ungodly slow based on what you’re loading it up with. Vanilla WordPress is pretty lean, but add big plugins like WooCommerce and Elementor and it’s a very different story.
If you can share your website URL, and/or tell us more about how exactly your website is setup, we may be able to help you optimize the performance.
I see. I don’t think I loaded this WP instance with much stuff. Sure, take a glance, it’s https://quaysideriviera.ca/ it’s probably mostly the network latency.
Right right. I can see that the initial response from the backend can take up to 2 seconds, but the following rendering is pretty quick. I think this is a very good indicator of network latency. Makes sense. I’m on the other side of the globe. I’ll try playing with CF to see if it can cache me properly.
The online tests vary by location and also the overall performance grade, understandable. But the loading times/lcp measuring 2.0s or more is intriguing and something we need to work on.
You can view the detailed test results and mitigations from the providers below and they mostly point to a WP plugin and an image. For a very basic site, this seems to be the one giving you issues.
No no, I use local network profiler in devtools to debug the site speed. After configuring caching on the CF side, it’s all fixed now. CF really graces us with too many great services for free.
And really, 2 seconds load time for 10 hours flight of distance is perfectly normal. The only way to fix that would be getting servers somewhere in North America. I think even South America would be faster than UK.
But also, infinityfree is probably the only hosting out there offering php and mysql for free. Even throwing in the script installer. And all that at good quality. It’s perfect for working on a live site or to host a site while it hasn’t reached significant traffic.
