Yeah, quaternions use algebra a lot, but game design uses a lot of trigonometry (since graphics calculations use triangles - due to the fact that triangles cannot be broken up into any other shape other than triangles).
I think imaginary numbers use a+bi where a and b are real numbers and I is the imaginary number, equal to the square root of -1.
Example: 2+4i.
Sounds familiar?
